Support location reminders that use cellular location only
While accuracy would be reduced, there would be less drain on the battery. Currently, the GPS can be turned off in the system settings but this would be more convenient.
It would also get rid of the issue on some devices in which the GPS stays on even when all location alarms are canceled.
This has been implemented in version 1.9 of the smartphone edition, and will be available for the tablet edition in a few days.

In the current version, you have more control over battery usage than in the previous version. Adjustments can be made in the settings area.
If you don't use locations at all, then you can disable the location field in the "fields/functions used" area. When locations are disabled, the app never runs a location check.
If you do use locations, then the Location Tracking settings can be adjusting to reduce battery usage. You can increase the location check interval and/or turn off usage of GPS.

Battery drain more than before update. Terrible. Want to turn off feature since I don't use it anyway. As it stands now I need to remember to turn off location unless using GPS . pain.

The easiest solution to this, it seems, would be for the developers to provide a Tasker/Locale hook. That would solve the battery drain problem without requiring from-scratch development of cellular location detection, and also allow users who want to to create highly customized triggers for reminders: Whenever you sit down at a computer; When you leave the house but only if it's before noon, etc.
That would make UTL a much more valuable tool. The Tasker plugin could even be an additional $1.99 download if that's an extra motivator.
Possible?

on my Samsung s4; the only time location reminders will work is if i enable wireless networks to determine my location; despite having GPS on all the time. It is a much less accurate result for the reminders however. I have this installed on my Motorola xoom and it is works perfectly with GPS only. what could be the issue that it will not work with GPS alone on my S4 device?

Given the new location services announced at Google I/O 2013, rather than specifically using cellular data, use the new service and let Google decide on the appropriate mechanism, based on the user's preferences.

Hi,
the new Google Maps which was announced zesterdaz at the Google I/O provides a new API for geolocation which is supposedly much more battery efficient and also supports geofencing:
http://developer.android.com/google/play-services/location.htmlPlease DO implement this. Thank you.

Hi,
the problem here is, that GPS cannot be turned off in the main settings, because it is need for all other location aware apps. Please, make this work. It is really bothering me having to uninstall and reinstall your app every time it gets stuck in the location-GPS-loop. Thanks!

I agree with the above comments regarding GPS and battery drain. Plus, my android tablet does not have a GPS. And lastly because I've found the need to add "internet access available " as a location because its often more important than where I am in particular. There are some tasks that I can work on offline, and others that require online access. I often have both time and internet access, but often not at an easily predicted location such as Starbucks or a library or the DMV. And in most of those cases, my location is not the important factor, but internet access is. Where I am is on or off the internet.

Battery drain is so strong that I am forced to turn locations off!
I believe most people only need cell accuracy. The Android framework provides this.
The developers of Tasker have some great insights into how to finetune location vs. power drain:

I agree, having GPS on all the time quickly drains the battery on most devices. While exotic strategies like turning GPS on only near target locations would be cool, having an option to use only network location could be done easily and be enough in most cases...

That would be very important for me too. It would be great if I could decide whether cellular or wifi or gps detection is used. GPS doesn't turn of on my Galaxy S2 (ICS) even if I cancel all all location alarms. Actually I have to restart the phone to get back to "normal" gps function.
